Write a list of every item or service you anticipate needing to get yourself up and running smoothly and smartly. What equipment can you DIY to keep the budget low? Can you do a lot of repairs and labour yourself? You'll need a good priced repair person if not.
You've already created a budget with the help of our blog on money matters, Business Plan - Financing, so this is the time to review it and make any adjustments.
Ask yourself the hard questions: Are you prepared to risk-it-all for this idea? To sacrifice and finance your business, your house, your belongings? What things are most important to you?"
What about a business savings plan for contingencies?
Brain dump all the things that could go wrong so that you have a plan for when they inevitably do. This should include environmental hazards, insurance needs and predators.
List of Contingencies
Wind protection incl shrubs, trees, buildings, shelters, etc.
Theft protection incl dog, motion sensors, alarm, etc.
Frost protection for new species and early outs
Other weather protection solutions, ex. Geodesic Dome
Part of our plan is to install 5 ft Bison fencing around unfenced areas of our property, repair existing fences, and add a gate to our driveway to protect from Harvest destruction and farm animal protection from:
Coyotes, fox, raccoons, rabbits, squirrels - black, grey, red, chipmunks
Deer, dogs, cats
Humans
In case things go South
Is there an underground cellar nearby? Can you dig one? This can be greenhouse, food storage or protection from environmental events
Can you go off-grid? Do you have a trailer or cabin with a solar panel, battery, propane, wood or gas
Is there a second career that you have always wanted to dabble in, maybe now is the time to expand our skill sets. Can you partner with others or *dare I say it* move in with Parents or other folks who love you?
Let us know: What's your contingency plan?
