Geodesic Greenhouse Fund

Updated: Feb 13

Experts say, the only way forward is to revive the small-scale farming movement for soil regeneration and community sustainability. In this time of high grocery prices for low quality food (or “food” that’s not food at all), we invite you to join us as we aim to supply healthy local products and services in Bruce County. By providing even a small donation (or shopping in our online store), you can be part of an effort to create thriving relationships in our community, produce good food and healing herbs.

At Hawkeye Hill, we flourish when growing our own food on God’s given earth. In light of everything we’ve learned, we have accepted the mission to join with the revolutionary urban farm movement to reimagine our food supply chain and strengthen our community resiliency.

Forever chemicals and pesticides are destroying the Earth’s soil quality. Valuable nutrients and soil microbes that make good food are near extinction. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils, Rome, Italy, by 2015, a third of the world’s soil had been depleted.

"We have taken soils for granted for a long time. Nevertheless, soils are the foundation of food production and food security, supplying plants with nutrients, water, and support for their roots. Soils function as Earth’s largest water filter and storage tank; they contain more carbon than all above-ground vegetation, hence regulating emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases; and they host a tremendous diversity of organisms of key importance to ecosystem processes."

Our aim is to expand our small-scall off-grid farm and create a rooftop garden and greenhouse boutique that will be beautiful and worth the visit. All while treating the land with permaculture and organic principles. While not certified organic, we employ regenerative processes and will use animal husbandry in a rotational grazing manner that creates a closed-loop system, minimal waste and minimal outside consumption.

Poor (often extreme) animal agriculture practices and pesticide-based conventional farming has thrown off the balance and is destroying our health. Processed food or food that has travelled very long distances should be a thing of the past. It requires a change of attitude and perception but it is oh so worth it.

Let’s pledge to reduce our grocery store shopping! Find local farmers who treat their animals and plants well. By re-allocating our hard-earned dollars, we’re helping to leave the earth better than we found it.

We have a co-op near us, Eat Local Grey Bruce. Is there something similar near you?

Eat Local Grey Bruce are a group of fine folks trying to create sustainable communities, yet they are struggling to compete with the big bad grocery stores, where low prices are false. The social, environmental and subsidized financial effects are far higher than if you just attended your local farmer’s market; where real, hard-working people in your neighbourhood have higher quality products that can’t be beat. A shift in perspective may be all that’s needed for you to try new foods that are in-season. Try these tips for seasonal eating from Wellness Mama.

Would you be willing to invest in sustainable agriculture on a local level? Every penny helps.

Here in Grey Bruce Counties, the need for food security is real and rising. Before the Government’s response to the COVID19 pandemic, almost 1 in 5 children lived in a low-income household and 20% of families were food insecure. Of course, since the pandemic, rates have only increased as lockdowns stretched on. It’s also true that youth in Grey Bruce Counties have higher than provincial averages of substance and alcohol abuse.

Joel Salatin, the author of Omnivore’s Dilemma, explains that food is the most direct connection to the natural world. This connection has largely been broken, and the consequences of human choices about what we consume extend far beyond what any one individual can see.

Why Geodesic?

The geodesic design allows the building to be virtually weatherproof. It is not only a highly functional design and can produce enough food for entire communities, but it is beautiful and healing and can be a safe place from outside pressures and toxins.

Join us as we figure out how to make this model more affordable, ultimately sustainable and easily replicable.

Fundraising Goals

Our immediate fundraising goal is $70K. This covers a 33’- 42’ Growing Dome Greenhouse Kit including upgrades, taxes and delivery. Arctic Acres is a Canadian based supplier and the Growing Dome Kits come with everything you need for a well-functioning eco-system, keeping humidity low and reducing mould growth.

With your help, we will realize our 3-year goal to raise another $150K to cover farm start-up and equipment costs, hire help, expand gathering spaces and organic practices production.

We also plan to research and develop healthy building materials to share with our local and online communities. To follow our trials please visit our "go off grid" blog.

Our end goal is a community space that brings people together to take care and support one another through it all, all year long.
